Apple Watch review: Elegant, delightful ... and completely optional

Is the long-rumored Apple Watch worth a spot on your wrist? Gizmag reviews Apple's first smartwatch
Apple Watch review: Elegant, delightful ... and completely optional

In terms of innovation, the Apple Watch is more like the iPod than it is the iPhone or iPad. The iPhone was (and is) Apple's most important product. It was like nothing else before it, pulling us all into the world of mobile multitouch that we live in today, one curious shopper at a time.

Three years later, the iPad took that same interface and adapted it to a much bigger, more immersive display.

At launch, both were without peers.

But the Apple Watch? Like the iPod, it doesn't really do much that its competitors weren't already doing. It just squeezes it all into a smaller and more elegant package.

That analogy only goes so far, though, because the quality and design gap between the Apple Watch and the best smartwatches to come before it is much smaller than the gap between the first iPod and its clunky predecessors. Wear watches are far from perfect, but they're infinitely better as smartwatches than the Creative Nomad and Diamond Rio ever were as MP3 players.

The Apple Watch is a delightful smartwatch that's a ton of fun to use. Of all the wearables we've handled (and we've handled quite a few), the Apple Watch is the most refined and human-oriented, as well as the easiest to fall in love with.

Apple squeezed its wearable tech into a smaller body than we've seen from any of the Android Wear or Samsung Gear watches. It's actually the closest in size to Pebble Steel, which has a black & white, non-touch display and primitive processing power. It's quite the feat that Apple crammed some pretty advanced tech into a casing that's around the same size as Pebble's barebones watch.
The Apple Watch isn't trying to look like a regular timekeeping watch, but the fact that it's as small as one makes all the difference. We find this approach to work a little better than watches like the Moto 360 (above, with the Apple Watch) or Asus ZenWatch, which look a bit more like standard watches than the Apple Watch does, but are also noticeably bigger.

... and keep in mind that we're only handling the 42 mm Apple Watch, which is the bigger model. The 38 mm model stretches that size gap between it and Android Wear watches even farther. The Apple Watch is the first smartwatch that women with smaller wrists can wear without looking like Dick Tracy's awkward twin sister.

The Apple Watch Sport that we're using is the entry-level model, but it doesn't feel cheap at all. Its aluminum body looks and feels smooth, and its fluoroelastomer (synthetic rubber) band is, somewhat paradoxically, a rubber watch strap that actually feels pretty high-end. If you were thinking about paying a few hundred bucks more for the stainless steel Apple Watch, mostly out of fear that the Sport is "the cheap one," then don't worry. We think this space gray Apple Watch Sport looks very sharp.

Apple is all about simplicity, so you'd expect its smartwatch software to be the simplest, right?

Well, not this time. Apple's "Watch OS" actually has the most complex wearable interface we've used, with its user interface and input methods requiring a bit of a learning curve. Unlike an iPhone or iPad, this isn't something that a child can pick up and just "get" within a minute or two.
Though the Watch is more complex than we'd (historically speaking) expect from Apple, it's every bit as intuitive as you'd expect. After learning the software layout and different ways of interacting with the watch (this took all of half an hour), we realized how naturally it was all laid out.

While that slight complexity the first time you put it on may be surprising to Apple Watch buyers, it also gives developers more ways for users to interact with their apps. Once everyone learns how to use the Apple Watch (trust us, it won't take long), and developers get some time to cut their teeth on it, there's a lot that we'll be able to do on these tiny screens. More so than other wearable operating systems, Watch OS feels like an exciting new frontier.

That's because the Apple Watch doesn't rely solely on a touchscreen and a button or two. It has the touchscreen and it has two physical buttons, but it also has a second, never-before-seen way of touching your screen, known as Force Touch, along with the winding "Digital Crown" you see below.
Here's a quick breakdown of all the different ways you can interact with the Apple Watch:

regular touchscreen input is still the first way of getting around: you know, taps and swipes like you'd use on any smartphone or tablet
pressing down farther on the touchscreen activates a "Force Click" – a secondary touch that often brings up menus or other options (also seen on Apple's latest MacBooks)
pressing the Digital Crown (again, that's the winder on the watch's top right side) serves as a back button and shortcut to your apps screen
twisting the Digital Crown lets you scroll up and down lists and messages, as well as zoom in and out of your app collection and images
double-pressing the Digital Crown jumps to your most recent app
long-pressing the Digital Crown starts Siri
single-pressing the lower right side button jumps to a list of your favorite contacts for easy messaging
double-pressing that messaging button activates Apple Pay
That's eight different input methods, all on a teeny-tiny device with only a screen and two physical buttons. So while the Apple Watch's UI might not be the simplest from the moment you pick it up, it still does more with less than any other wearable we've used. Once you learn the ropes, this is the most advanced and intuitive smartwatch OS today.

Jaybird Reveals Freedom And X3 Bluetooth Headphones At CES, Available Later In 2016

We've had Bluetooth technology for the better part of two decades now, so it's surprising that it's still so hard to find a decent pair of headphones that use it. One of the more consistently good brands for wireless headphones, at least of the sporty variety, has been Jaybird. The company's using CES to show off the newest entries in its product lineup, and by "newest," I mean it will be three to six months at the earliest before you see either of them. Meet the Jaybird Freedom, an ostensibly new design (despite the fact that the company has used the "Freedom" name on models before), and the Jaybird X3, the latest revision of the popular original and the more recent X2.

The Freedom earbuds are meant to be the smaller and less obtrusive of the two options. While the slim buds are still connected with a wire between them, the speaker modules themselves are tiny, which should be a boon to anyone who has especially small earlobes. "Enhanced comfort ear fins" and memory foam tips will also help in that regard. Jaybird says that the Freedom buds should be good for eight hours of listening time, and they come with an inline metal remote. They won't come cheap: when they launch in Q2 they'll cost you $199.95 at retail, no matter which one of the five color options you choose.

The Jaybird X3 is the more conventional option, with a "SignalPlus" Bluetooth antenna that makes for a more reliable connection outdoors, plus passive noise isolation, a sweat-proof design, and the same trademark "earfins" as the previous model. Despite being larger, these buds have a slightly shorter 7 hour battery life. Like the Freedom the X3 model includes an in-line remote, and both of them need a separate app on Android or iOS to take care of the software equalizer and other goodies. The X3 will cost a more reasonable $149.95 when it hits retailers in Q3, and you'll be able to pick from five colors.

TABTIMES MONTHLY – JANUARY 2016 – APPLE IPAD MINI 4 INTERNATIONAL GIVEAWAY

Welcome to our January TabTimes Monthly, an overview of the best new tablets and tablet related technology news and reviews of the last month in the industry. Subscribers to our TabTimes Monthly newsletter will be familiar with what they see here, just be sure to sign up for our giveaway for a chance to win a new tablet each month.

I hope you enjoy some of our favorite news from December of 2015, and when you get through to the end, sign up for your chance to win the latest iteration of Apple’s small tablet, the iPad Mini 4.

Microsoft Surface Pro 4 review

Following up on our first 48 hours from last month, we added our full review of the Surface Pro 4 in December. I don’t want to spoil the review, but this is a serious contender for a tablet that can do it all. I may be crediting the tablet for features made available from the accessories, but there is no doubt, the complete package is just that, a pretty complete computing package.

Apple iPad Pro review

We also took the new Apple iPad Pro for a 48 hour spin last month, and it too has had the full review treatment this past month. One thing remained true, this is a large tablet that may be a hard sell to the average user, but may just be exactly what some of you are looking for. We have enjoyed our time with this tablet, it lacks for nothing that Apple hardware has to offer.

Best Android tablets

We shared our list of the best cheap Android tablets last month, this time around we’re talking the best tablets regardless price. If you are in the market for a great new Android tablet, these are the ones we think you should consider.

Google’s Pixel C tablet is up for sale

Announced earlier in the year, Google’s new Android powered Pixel C went up for sale in December. Prices at $499 there are some that felt this was a bit too expensive, particularly considering the additional charge for the optional detachable keyboard. Our brethren over at Android Authority have taken the Pixel C for a spin, and we expect to get our hands on it soon as well. Until then, check out our coverage and decide if this tablet is worth the price for you needs.

Apple iPad Air 3 Rumors: Device Could Arrive With MacBook 2016, iPhone 6C, Apple Watch 2 In March

China's Economic Daily News says there will be no iPad Air 3 for 2015, based on Foxconn’s 2015 orders specific to Apple.
PHOTO: REUTERS/ROBERT GALBRAITH
The sixth generation tablet from Apple, the iPad Air 2, was launched this year and it is unlikely to launch a successor model this year. However, speculations are rife that the iPad Air 3 could arrive next year in March alongside other Apple products, including MacBook 2016, iPhone 6C and Apple Watch 2.

In September this year, Apple had unleashed the iPad Pro, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus and iPad Mini 4, but iPad Air 3 remained unannounced. According to Apple Insider, a recent survey by Loyalytics has revealed that among all the users of Apple iPads, 20 percent are owners of iPad 2 from 2011. Hence, it is the most popular iPad model.

The research also revealed that the iPad Air 2 constitute only 9 percent of iPad owners. The newly released iPad Mini 4 and iPad Mini 3 account only 2.3 percent of iPad users. This clearly shows that iPad users do not upgrade to a newer model frequently. This is one of the major reasons why the iPad sales have stooped down in the recent years.

According to Ecumenical News, the Apple iPad Air 3 rumors suggest that it will arrive in 2016. In this year, Apple had for the first time had held a launch event in the month of March to announce a new MacBook. In the coming year too, Apple is expected to hold a launch event to announce a newer MacBook 2016, Apple iPhone 6C and Apple

Samsung Gear S2 coming to Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and US Cellular on October 2

Samsung just recently launched its new Tizen-powered smartwatch, the Gear S2, at IFA 2015 in Berlin. Even though various retail stores have already opened up pre-orders, until now, Samsung has been doing a great job at keeping us in the dark about the watch’s availability. At the trade show, Samsung told us that the Gear S2 would be available for purchase from its website and other retailers sometime in October, though the exact date has yet to be officially announced.

THE GEAR S2 WON'T BE AVAILABLE ON SPRINT AT LAUNCH
According to an SEA Training video, which is associated with Samsung Electronics America, we now have a little more information regarding the watch’s U.S. release date. Around the one hour and fifty-five minute mark in the video, the speaker explains that the Bluetooth-only version of the Gear S2 will come to Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular stores in the United States on Friday, October 2nd. He adds that Sprint will not carry the Gear S2 at launch, though he doesn’t specify whether or not the carrier has plans to sell the smartwatch in the future. Sprint has yet to comment on the Gear S2’s availability.

Nokia Swan is Both a Phablet and a Tablet, With 42 Megapixel Camera and Great Lighting

It’s been a while since I’ve last seen a hybrid between a phone and a tablet, so I’m happy to have found the Nokia Swan concept. This device is rendered by Dani Vinh, from Vietnam and it’s an excellent idea. It combines a phablet and a tablet and looks stylish while doing that.

This model has a 42 megapixel camera, 128 GB of storage and a quad core CPU, probably an Intel. A cool aluminum frame with disco rim lights make this device stand out of the crowd. When folded, the device is a regular smartphone, that somehow uses HTC Sense, as shown in some of the shots. The back supposedly features a soft touch texture, but it’s more like leather imitation to me.

Once opened up, the device becomes a bit of a Chromebook with two touchscreens, one used as the display and the other as the virtual keyboard. All 3 screens are edge to edge ones and if I were to guess, I’d say the device has a 5.5 inch screen and once the hinge rotates, it becomes an 11 inch tablet, or a smaller laptop. Excellent piece of work!

Sony Talks VR and 2016 Games in Paris

While Microsoft has been driving home the potential hits it has for the holidays, Sony has sat silent. That changed this week at Paris Games Week, when Sony set the tone for the next year or so by touting 21 games, mostly exclusives, poised to redefine the PlayStation 4 experience.

It's what PlayStation fans have been waiting for -- a listing of completely new games. Sony had been focusing on minting indies and HD remasters.

At its first-ever appearance at Paris Games Week, the company put on a console-selling show that evidenced the potential of the latest PlayStation and the upcoming PlayStation VR headset.

Sony provided updates on previously announced games Street Fighter V (PS4/PC), Uncharted 4 (PS4), Wild (PS4), Star Wars: Battlefront (all consoles and PC) and others. There was even a commitment to release procedurally generated space explorer No Man's Sky (PS4/PC) -- that'd be June 2016.

Sony's PlayStation 4 Virtual Reality Hardware Targeted for 2016

Sony targets 2016 for a “Project Morpheus” virtual reality release on the PlayStation 4. Having revealed a new and much-enhanced prototype of a VR headset at the Game Developers Conference, Sony also unveiled plans for its release along with tentative specs. First seen at last year’s GDC, the headset now features an upgraded 5.7-inch OLED screen, greatly reducing motion blur and latency that was found in the original. Morpheus is also expected to support graphics at 120 frames per second, and PS4 consoles are able to natively support that output. Not only did Sony reveal the hardware, but they demoed three games that use Morpheus as well. One of which is named “London Heist,” a cover-based first-person shooting game in which you duck behind desks, pop up to shoot, and use PlayStation Move controllers to reload. Using the controllers, the device is able to translate real physical movements into the game, resulting in a very engaging and firsthand primary experience. Sony will begin releasing Morpheus to developers in April, but check back for more information and details.

XBox One will double as DVR recorder starting in 2016

Gamers on Xbox One will be able to record their favorite TV shows while slaying dragons and shooting their virtual enemies as of next year.
Announced out of Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, Microsoft said the new features will allow users to record live over-the-air TV and sideload or transfer shows to mobile devices for on-the-go viewing.
Though the new features will be free, Xbox One users will need to a tuner and external hard driv

The best iPad mini deals in February 2016

The iPad mini is almost flawless in so many ways and we've picked out all the best iPad mini deals so you can find a cheap one.

The design of the iPad mini is still the best in the tablet category, with no Android tablet really coming close in this class. The fast processor and premium design makes it a great looking tablet, too, and the Retina display on the iPad mini 2 and 3 is simply stunning.

On top of that, iOS 8 is an excellent OS and even gaming is sensational on this tablet. In short, it's the best 7-inch tablet out there. So here are all the best iPad mini deals so you can grab one at the best possible price...

Best iPad mini, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3 and iPad mini 4 deals...

iPad mini 4 deals

The best 7-inch tablet ever made

One of the major changes with the iPad mini 4 over last year's mini 3 is its design. It may look the same, but it's been slimmed down from 7.5mm to a wafer thin 6.1mm. It's also now more powerful, has a stunning screen and the battery is still a 10-hour beast. The A8 processor is a good step up from the A7 inside the mini 3 so if you're going to play 3D games or throw around some of the more hefty iPad apps from the App Store, this is certainly your best option

Sony Xperia Z5 vs. iPhone 6S – Picking Out a Champ

Last year, two sterling smartphones came out: Apple’s iPhone 6s and Sony’s Xperia Z5. We’re going to go over their design, cameras, specs and more to help you pick out a champ.

Design and display

Sony has been using the OmniBalance design ever since the Xperia Z came out in 2013. Apple has also been constantly improving the design of the iPhone line.

Sony’s device rocks a black chassis and has the fingerprint sensor addition placed on its sideways power knobs. The Z5 also has a glass back and it has the IP65 and IP68 certificate, which makes it water and dustproof. The iPhone S6 packs a stronger aluminium frame and the screen glass has also been fortified.

Sony Xperia Z5 comes with a 1,080×1,920-resolution IPS display while the iPhone 6s has a 750×1,334-resolution display.

Camera and battery

The iPhone 6s delivers a 12 MP back end camera and 5 MP FFC one.  With the iPhone 6s, one has the Live Photos option. The Sony Xperia Z5 on the other hand, packs a huge 23 MP Exmor RS rear camera and it has its SteadyShot OIS as well as the hybrid autofocus.
Battery wise, the iPhone 6s has a 1,715mAh battery incorporated whereas the Xperia Z5 packs a 2,900mAh battery. The iPhone’s battery should last a whole day maybe a day and half, if you use it with moderation while the Xperia Z5’s battery lasts 2 days.

Features

The iPhone 6s has the 3D Touch function and with it you can enable different options depending on the pressure you apply to the screen. The Sony Xperia Z5 has a microSD slot and the fingerprint scanner. The latter device offers 32GB of storage, which can be expanded.

Final thoughts

As far as costs, the Sony Xperia Z5 retails for £521, while the iPhone is priced at £539. In short, if you want a premium camera and battery, the Xpria Z5 is worth the purchase, however the iPhone 6s does deliver a snazzy design, great features and of course the 3D Touch function, which is undeniably amazing.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2016) vs Galaxy A5 (2016) vs Apple iPhone 6s: quick camera comparison

Samsung's new, 2016 Galaxy A series have arrived and we have the Galaxy A7 (2016 edition) and Galaxy A5 (2016) undergoing our testing. We were particularly curious to see how good are their cameras and to get a better idea, we compare them against each other and against the popular Apple iPhone 6s for reference.

The Galaxy A7 (2016) and Galaxy A5 (2016) are shockingly similar: both have the same stylish design, just differing slightly in terms of size as the A7 is the larger, 5.5" phone, while the A5 has a 5.2" display.

In terms of camera specs, the two are also identical: both have a 13-megapixel main camera with the same firmware version, the same, wide f/1.9 lens, both have optical image stabilization (OIS), and even the selfie cameras are the same, 5-megapixel sensors.

We were particularly curious to see if this similarity results in equally similar photos and how they compare against one of the best camera phones on the market, the iPhone 6s.
General impressions

After shooting for a few days in various conditions with both new Galaxies, there is one key conclusion: the Galaxy A7 (2016) and Galaxy A5 (2016) have identical cameras. We could not find any meaningful difference in image quality between the two among all of our videos and images, so we'll just conclude that the A7 (2016) and A5 (2016) use one and the same camera.

And it's a pretty fast and good camera. The Quick Launch shortcut (double click the home screen) to launch the camera works wonders for those impromptu moments. The camera menu is the same as in the Galaxy S6 and Note 5: with no fluff and convenient separate buttons for video and image capture, as well as a comfortably placed in the bottom button to switch between the front and rear cameras.

iPhone 7 vs Samsung Galaxy S7: The Biggest & Best Phones of 2016 Compared

Yes, none of these phones are out yet, but so what? The rumour mill is such a far reaching, thorough and accurate beastie these days that we already know so much about both the iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy S7. The Samsung Galaxy S7 will arrive first of course, it'll come out next month, February, just ahead of Mobile World Congress. Meanwhile, Apple's next iPhone, the iPhone 7, won't arrive until the tail end of the year - but that hasn't stopped there being a ton of leaks about it, so we've already got a pretty good picture of how things will be!

But it’s not just the iPhone 7 destined for release in 2016. Nope. Apple is also readying the launch of a new 4in handset thought to be known as the iPhone 5se. Pitched as a sort of reboot to 2013’s iPhone 5c, the iPhone 5se will be a mix of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 5, bundled into one non-plastic chassis. The handset will be available in three colour schemes (rose gold, silver, space gray) and feature TouchID for Apple Pay.

The iPhone 5c is often viewed as a failure. But this really couldn’t be further from the case; analysts reckon Apple has shifted upwards of 24 million iPhone 5c units since launch. That is a very impressive figure whichever way you look at it -- did Sony, LG or HTC sell that many phones during the same period? You bet your ASS they didn’t and it is for this reason that a return of the 4in iPhone range makes a lot of sense. It WAS a popular handset.

Samsung has now confirmed that the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 EDGE will launch on February 21, confirming previous rumours that suggested the handsets would launch in and around MWC 2016 in Barcelona, Spain. The Galaxy S7 will be joined by the LG G5, a few new handsets from Sony, and a bunch of other releases from Google’s huge pile of Android partners. HTC is apparently NOT launching its One M10 at the expo, however, in order to avoid any clashing with Samsung’s big reveal, which always grabs headlines.

You can see what other handsets are coming in the new year in our Guide To 2016’s Most Exciting Phones. Some are pretty speculative — Nokia’s Android phone, for instance — while others, the OnePlus 3, more Android BlackBerry handsets, and the Moto X 2016, are all definitely on the agenda for 2016.

Nokia Lumia 930 vs Lumia 925: What's the difference?

Windows Phone is becoming a more and more compelling smartphone choice, with Nokia particularly leading the charge in bringing innovative features to Microsoft's mobile platform.
The newest flagship device in the portfolio is the Nokia Lumia 930, announced by Stephen Elop on stage at Build 2014 in San Francisco.
The new handset logically steps in to replace the Nokia Lumia 925, one of our favourite Windows Phone devices. But what exactly is the difference between these two handsets?
Design: Lumia 930 is beefy
The Nokia Lumia 930 is the global version of the Lumia Icon launched on Verizon in the US recently. It moves from the Lumia 925's curved build to one that has a squarer profile.
However, it sticks to the same design language, offering a metal frame into which the coloured polycarbonate back and glass front fits. The Lumia 930 is a beefier-looking device, the Lumia 925 is one that fits more naturally into your clasping hand.
The Lumia 930 measures 137 x 71 x 9.8mm, an expansion in all directions over the Lumia 925's 129 x 70.6 x 8.5mms. That beefing up is reflected in the weight too: the 930 tips the scales at 167g, the 925 was a mere 139g, some 28g lighter.
Display: Lumia 930 is larger, sharper
Device updates are about progress and a lot has happened in Windows Phone since the Lumia 925 launched. Support for full HD displays is one thing and the Lumia 930 arrives with a 5-inch 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution display, 441ppi.
The Lumia 925 offered 1280 x 768 pixels over 4.5-inches, 334ppi, so the Lumia 930 is larger, sharper and 16:9 rather than 5:3. Both are topped with Corning Gorilla Glass.
The Lumia 930 competes with flagship Android devices for size and resolution, but the 925 display is pretty good, the 5:3 aspect suiting the smaller size.
We particularly liked the AMOLED display of the 925 and we'd expect the 930 to offer the same sort of colour palette.
Camera: PureView muscle
The Nokia Lumia 925 launched to counter the criticism of the bloated Lumia 920 and brought with it the same excellent 8.7-megapixel PureView camera. As a camera it performs well, offering access to plenty of clever Nokia photo features.
The Lumia 930 takes PureView to the next level with a 20-megapixel sensor, as found previously on the Lumia 1520. It's a good performer, good in low light, with plenty of advanced features.
Both cameras are supported by optical image stabilisation to keep things blur free, as well as a dual LED flash.
Power: Lumia 930 is built for speed
The Nokia Lumia 930 has a 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset and 2GB of RAM. We'd expect the same sort of slick experience we had on the Lumia 1520 to be found on the 930.
The Lumia 925 lags behind in every sense, with a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 and 1GB of RAM.
Additionally, the Lumia 930 has a 2420mAh battery compared to the 2000mAh of the 925. We found the 925 lasted most of a day, but not as long as we'd like; the 930 should perform better, but also comes with built-in Qi wireless charging. The Nokia Lumia Icon offers good battery life and we'd expect the 930 to follow suit.
Storage
Neither the Nokia Lumia 930 nor the 925 offer storage expansion: there's no microSD card slot.
The Lumia 930 has 32GB of internal storage and the standard 7GB of OneDrive cloud space. The Lumia 925 comes in 16/32GB models, again with 7GB OneDrive.
Software
The Nokia Lumia 930 launches on Windows Phone 8.1, along with a range of Nokia software tweaks. We're yet to see all of what this device offers, but Nokia has detailed new Living Images and an updated Nokia Storyteller app.
The Nokia Lumia 925 is currently on Windows Phone 8 with Lumia Black, however Nokia has already confirmed that it will be updated to 8.1, so we wouldn't expect a huge software difference between the two devices.
As the Lumia 930 is so new, it's software we know the least about at the time of writing.
Summing up
The Nokia Lumia 925 is a great handset, we really like it. It offers great design, a good camera and plenty of features from Nokia to make Windows Phone more enticing.
The Lumia 930 offers more in every direction. The resolution of the camera and the display, as well as that powerful SD800 chip and new software will steal headlines, but the beefier, squarer, design might deter some.
The Nokia Lumia 930 will be available in June 2014. We will bring you a full review as soon as we can.
