Microsoft's Surface Phone MIGHT Show Up In 2017 -- But Will It Be Worth The Wait?

Microsoft is apparently gearing up to launch a Surface branded phone running Windows 10 Mobile. But is it too late?

Microsoft’s Windows 10 Mobile currently owns around 1% of the total mobile space. The rest is dominated by Android and iOS. To be sure, in mobile there are two platforms: Apple’s and Google’s and NO ONE else gets a look in despite concerted efforts from both Microsoft and BlackBerry.

Microsoft has tried and failed to capture market share over the years, running initiative after acquisition after initiative but has so far failed to make a dent. And that’s Microsoft — one of the biggest tech companies on the planet. If it can’t make something stick, it’s no wonder BlackBerry 10 failed as well.

This is why BlackBerry started using Android. It is also why the newly founded Nokia will use Android. But Microsoft is still up for having a crack at the mobile space with Windows 10 Mobile. Results of Microsoft’s Windows 10 Mobile campaign, so far, have been pretty dire. The company’s Lumia 950 handsets died on arrival.

But so too did the original Surface tablets, and look at them now — they’re doing very well, indeed. And this is what Microsoft is holding our for in the mobile space. It is also why Microsoft is now limbering up to release a Surface phone, according to reports. It wants to use that brand, which is now successful, to buy it some credence in the mobile space.

Reports suggest Microsoft originally intended to do this WAY back in 2012, but instead opted to acquire Nokia instead, a move that didn’t exactly go entirely to plan. Now, four years later, Microsoft is ready to give the Surface phone another go. But is it too late? Will people switch from Android and iOS to Windows 10 Mobile for their phone-based needs?

A leaked image of the proposed Surface Phone has appeared on Baidu and the source, according to reports, has a relatively strong history of producing solid leaks. The handset looks pretty nice too, far more appealing than Microsoft’s current flagships, the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL.
The specs sound pretty decent too: “the photo shows a Surface Phone with a nifty keyboard cover that appears similar in functionality to the Touch Cover line of accessories Microsoft created for its surface tablets,” reports BGR.

“The post also stated that the phone will have a 5.7-inch touchscreen display with 2K resolution, a 20-megapixel rear camera with a Carl Zeiss lens, and a Snapdragon 830 processor.”

Windows 10 Mobile is also a very compelling solution too. All that’s required is some decent hardware. I for one am very excited about the prospect of a Surface Phone. It is arguably the only way Microsoft can get the message across about Windows 10 Mobile to the masses. I guess now it’s just a case of whether or not the masses are ready and willing to accept a Microsoft Surface Phone.

Reports are now suggesting we’ll have to wait until 2017 to see this alleged Surface Phone. Why the delay? I have no idea. Perhaps Microsoft is waiting to see what Apple does with its iPhone 7. Another point: an earlier release might not make much difference; Microsoft’s presence in the mobile space isn’t particularly strong.

Another, more interesting prospective, is that Microsoft is working on a few new USPs — things like deeper Cortana integration, some UX changes and perhaps even some hardware-based innovation. There is talk of the handset featuring a QWERTY keyboard and a kickstand just like Microsoft’s Surface line of tablets.

Obviously, ALL of this is hearsay at present. But given the lay of the land — zero big players have adopted or indicated they would consider adopting Windows 10 Mobile — it makes sense for Microsoft to develop its own hardware and show potential hardware partners just what’s possible with Windows 10 Mobile. This is what Apple does and, if done right, can yield massive profits in the long run.

Sony Xperia X 2017 Rumors: Snapdragon 1000, 4GB RAM, Price $800

Sony is expected to release the next version of its flagship Xperia X 2017 device with new features by Q1 2017. If rumors are to be believed, Sony will launch two variants of Xperia X 2017, although there is a possibility of another model. Here is what we have heard about the Sony Xperia X 2017’s specifications, features, release date and price.

To kick things off, there are unconfirmed reports that Sony will integrate dual-lens cameras along with all the devices shipped after January 1.

According to Kenichiro Yoshida, Sony CFO, the company has developed a unique dual-camera technology, which would be adopted by major smartphone manufacturers in 2016. He revealed that the total smartphone market share is coming down in 2016 and will pick up by 2017 when the adoption of dual-camera smartphones gains momentum.

In fact, the upcoming iPhone 7 Plus and LG G6 are expected to ship with dual-camera lenses, which have significant advantages. You will be able to capture stunning images even in low-light conditions since there are two separate sensors inside the smartphone.

As per reliable sources, the upcoming Sony Xperia X 2017 will have a 20MP primary camera coupled with 12MP front-facing shooter packing triple LED Flash technology.

According to analysts, smartphones will take over digital camera industry by the middle of 2017, when we can expect the launch of several devices with dual-lens cameras.

While the Xperia X1 is expected to be equipped with a Snapdragon 650 processor, 3GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, the next generation Xperia, dubbed as X1 Power, should be shipped with 4 GB RAM and 64GB storage. We can also expect the new devices to be equipped with Snapdragon 1000.

Both devices will provide the capability to expand the storage up to 512GB since we can expect the release of 512GB SD cards by the end of December 2016.

Moreover, the Xperia X 2017 series will feature curved glass display, metal body structure and a significantly higher battery with X1 Power occupying 5,000mAh battery. However, the low-end version will be powered by a 3,500mAh battery.

With the addition of several new features, the price of the device will also increase. We expect the price to shoot up to $800 for an advanced version of Xperia X 2017.

Editor’s note: The particular info is based on early rumors about the device, hence none of the above is confirmed to be featured in the final product — some of which could be, though.

Samsung’s 2017 flagship roadmap might consist of five models, including foldable ‘Galaxy X’

Yes, it’s premature, almost ridiculously so, and it’d definitely be wise to wait and see how the Galaxy Note 6 (and its purported “Lite” derivation) come to pass before spreading unsubstantiated gossip about sequels to both it and the S7 that Samsung probably didn’t settle on just yet.

Well, we all know a Galaxy S8 (or two) and Note 7 (or two) will roll out at some point next year, but it’s quite the stretch to imagine their timelines and spec sheets are already worked out. It’s even less plausible that an obscure Chinese tipster somehow obtained intel on 2017 Samsung flagships, though if edge-to-edge iPhone 7s hearsay is acceptable, why wouldn’t something like this also deserve a quick media acknowledgment?

The same leakster wannabe that recently “divulged” pretty far-fetched Note 6 Lite information apparently believes there will be five main Galaxy-series high-enders released after this fall’s phablet.

These presumably include S8, S8 Edge, Note 7 and Note 7 Edge variants with “2.5K” display resolution, Super AMOLED and RGB technology, as well as a foldable “Galaxy X” capable of producing 4K video content on a PenTile Diamond matrix screen.

For the record, 2.5K is likely the same thing as 2K or Quad HD, i.e. 2,560 x 1,440 pixels, while 4K or UHD sees the ante upped to 3,840 x 2,160. The Galaxy X may or may not be the official market name of the long-rumored, long-in-development Project Valley phone, which is expected to seamlessly curl up in a 5-inch ball from its primary 7-inch form factor.

Still, nothing’s set in stone at the moment. Not even the specifications of the fast-approaching GNote 6.

Samsung to release foldable smartphone in 2017

Foldable Smartphone, which is being developed by Samsung Electronics, is taking its shape. It is a new-concept product which can be a 5-inch Smartphone and 7-inch tablet if opened.
It is heard that Samsung Electronics acquired many technologies that are needed to implement Foldable Smartphone. It is going to mass-produce foldable display by end of this year and is planning to sell Foldable Smartphones on markets starting from next year.
According to industry on the 31st, it is known that Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display have partnered up with domestic and foreign businesses to develop 7-inch foldable Smartphones.
Foldable Smartphone is a Smartphone that can bend a screen in half by using OLED Display. One can carry it like a wallet and use it by opening it.
IT was designed so that it can be used as a Smartphone and a tablet. 7-inch display is a size that is most generalized for portable tablets like iPad Mini.

If 7-inch display is folded in half, its size is reduced to about 5-inch and can implement a size that is similar to a current Smartphone.
Samsung Display is in charge of developing OLED Displays. Currently a prototype of Foldable Display is finished with development. Samsung Electronics is hoping to mass-produce Foldable Displays starting from second half of this year.
Based on Foldable Display, Samsung Electronics is planning to finish developing Foldable Smartphone. Because it still has few other tasks to complete, release of actual Foldable Smartphone is going to take place after next year.
Foldable Smartphone is a product that is being viewed as next-generation Smartphone. As Smartphone markets are reaching their climax, it has become difficult to create demands with general products.
Industries are expecting that Foldable Smartphones will create new momentum in Smartphone markets that are somewhat slowing down. Just like how a large cellphone like a size of a brick has become smaller and how normal flip-phone has become a Smartphone, industries are expecting that Foldable Smartphone will create new innovation in Smartphone markets. It is heard that Samsung Electronics has been preparing for Foldable Smartphones since 3 years ago because it knew that Smartphone markets were slowing down.
“Although mass-production cannot be concluded hastily since Samsung Electronics still has few other major tasks to complete, I’ve heard that Samsung Electronics had made considerable amount of results in the time being.” said a representative of an industry that is familiar with development of Samsung Electronics’ Foldable Smartphone.
Samsung Electronics is showing confidence in Foldable Smartphones.
“Development of Foldable OLED is taking place according to our plan.” said Director Lee Chang-hoon of Samsung Display at performance conference call that took place in January. “We are planning on mass-production and release of this product by discussing with our partners.”

Apple AirPods release date, specs, features UK | New Apple wireless earphones release date: Conflicting reports say AirPods will ship 17 Nov... or not until Jan 2017

Apple's stunning, but controversial AirPods wireless headphones are delayed until January 2017. How much will AirPods cost, when will AirPods be available in the UK and more importantly, what do AirPods offer? Read on to find out all the details. Latest: Conflicting reports say AirPods will ship 17 Nov... or not until Jan 2017
When will Apple release its wireless AirPods? What do AirPods offer? How much will Apple's wireless headphones cost?

Rumours regarding Apple working on wireless headphones aren't new - they've been doing the rounds for years. However, what is new is the announcement of AirPods, Apple's wireless earphones, during the iPhone 7 launch. How much will AirPods cost, when will AirPods be available in the UK and more importantly, what do AirPods offer? These are all the questions we look to answer in this article.
Apple AirPods release date, price UK: UK price
So, how much will Apple's new wireless AirPods set back the average consumer in the UK? Apple will sell the wireless earphones for £159 in the UK once they are released, which doesn't seem too bad when you consider that other wireless earphones (like Earin) cost closer to £200. However, the fact that the AirPods cost the same in dollars ($159) as they do in pounds may make prospective UK buyers feel a little hard done by.

Apple AirPods release date, price UK: Release date
If you can swallow that price tag, the wireless AirPods will be available in January 2017 from the Apple Store - according to Chinese supply chain sources. This might come to a disappointment to some, given that the initial release date was set for 'late October', but there have evidently been unforeseen delays. You'll have to hold out from treating others or yourself until after Christmas!

Except... one report suggests they could arrive a little earlier than that. The German-language site apfelpage.de, as spotted by Digital Spy, thinks the AirPods will arrive in stores on 17 November ready for a sale launch on 18-19 November. This is according to the site's anonymous source, although they were able to identify him or her as an employee at the Apple reseller Conrad.

"According to information from the employee," said the Apfelpage reader who sent in the tip, as interpreted by Google Translate, "they have stockpiles from 17.11, I will then store them between 18-19 November."

It should be noted that, regardless of all these rumours, no official release date has been confirmed by Apple. The company merely stated, when announcing that it wouldn't be able to hit the expected October schedule, that it didn't feel "ready for its customers".

The Galaxy S8 is exciting, but Samsung’s rumored bendable phone sounds amazing .

The most desirable and exciting phones to come from Samsung next year may not have the Galaxy S name attached. Rumors are spreading fast that the company will have bendy, flexible screens ready for release in early 2017, but they won’t be fitted to the Galaxy S8, according to sources speaking to Bloomberg.
We shouldn’t expect just one flexible screened phone either, because the anonymous source leaked two devices, and both could arrive at next year’s Mobile World Congress technology show, set to take place between February 27 and March 2. The first may be a phone with a folding clamshell design, described as “like a cosmetic compact” by the leak, and the second may have a roll-out screen that takes the display size from 5-inches to 8-inches.
Related: Samsung has tried flexible screens already, do you remember the Galaxy Round?
Both are expected to use Samsung’s flexible OLED screen technology, and are currently being worked on under the Project Valley codename, but when they do go on sale, it won’t be under the Galaxy S name. When Samsung introduced its Edge display, it used the Galaxy Note first, before adopting the technology on the Galaxy S range. While the devices described here may get a unique name initially, there’s a chance the rolling, flexing displays will spread to other Samsung hardware in the future.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about flexible screens from Samsung. The rumors have been around for years, but recently they have become more regular, adding weight to the rumor of a 2017 release. Recently, a patent showed how Samsung may use its rolled-up screen technology on a phone, and it showed off a working prototype of the screen at a tech show, although it only extended to 5.7-inches in size.
Even the 2017 date has been mentioned before, with a South Korean report from April stating Samsung planned to have flexible screens in mass production by next year, and that one possible use would be transforming a 5-inch phone into a 7-inch tablet. They have been a while coming, but it looks like there’s less than a year to go before we see an innovation that could change the way phones are designed.

Apple iPhone 7 Plus

The iPhone 7 Plus will obviously be a larger device with similar features as the iPhone 7. However, size is not the only difference. It is anticipated that the device will feature 3GB of RAM which will take the performance to a whole new level. Plus, the sleek design of the body will also be a major plus point for the brand. After all, a 5.5 – 5.7 inch device with a slim design and faster performance will definitely woo Apple fans.

Just like the iPhone 7, the iPhone 7 Plus will have inductive charging capabilities, force touch, and the latest iOS version. This upcoming smartphone in 2016 will compete with Android devices that have large screen sizes. Although, from a specs perspective, it might not seem as attractive as the feature heavy devices that are hitting the market. However, this should appeal to those customers who have already purchased the iPhone 6 Plus and are satisfied with the product.

Xiaomi has announced some of their handsets will get the Android 7.0 update in 2017.
Some of the devices that will receive the new update are the Mi max, Mi5, Mi4 and Redmi Note 3. Xiaomi has already released the Android Marshmallow update to many of its devices and now some more handsets are going to get the Android M updates.

Speculations are doing the rounds that the update will come to the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S7 Edge, Galaxy S7, S6 Edge +, S6 Edge, Galaxy Note 7 and Galaxy S6.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 should have Android Marshmallow on most carriers such as T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon and AT&T. As for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, it has come on the Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon.
In addition, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 is getting the Android M update in 8.0 and 9.7 inch sizes. The Galaxy Tab S and the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 have got the update.
Unfortunately, Samsung Galaxy S4 and Samsung Galaxy S3 will not receive the Android Marshmallow update.
People who have a newer Samsung devices should check their Settings and System Updates to see if Android Marshmallow is ready to download over-the-air.  It is important to note that particular carriers get the Android update before others.
Meanwhile, the electronics company LG will announce the V20 smartphone on September 6 and it will begin selling the device soon after that, according to a report from Engadget.
A LG spokesperson said that the device will also be sold in Canada. Furthermore, the company said that V20 will be the world's first smartphone to run Android N, Canada NewsWire reported. It is expected that the smartphone will be identical to the V10 that includes having two displays.

Mobile devices will be more powerful than PlayStation 4, Xbox One in 2017, ARM forecasts (update)

AMSTERDAM — That supercomputer in your pocket will soon make Sony’s and Microsoft’s latest home gaming consoles look old and crusty.

ARM, the technology design company responsible for the chip architecture in mobile devices, is preparing for another big leap in computational power for smartphones and tablets. At the Casual Connect conference in Amsterdam this week, ARM ecosystem director Nizar Romdan explained that the chips that his company creates with partners like Nvidia, Samsung, and Texas Instruments will generate visuals on par with and then surpass what you get from the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles by the end of 2017. That means we are about a year away from having smartphone and tablets that are capable of running the same games (at least graphically) that we previously bought dedicated gaming hardware for. This could bring more hardcore players into the $30 billion mobile gaming market, but it could also power the software for mobile virtual reality. Tech adviser Digi-Capital predicts VR and AR gaming on all platforms could generate $10 billion in revenue by 2020.

“Mobile hardware is already powerful,” said Romdan at Casual Connect Europe. “If you take today’s high-end smartphone or tablet, the performance is already better than Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It’s catching up quickly with Xbox One and PlayStation 4.”
To illustrate his point, Romdan included a chart that shows the relative power of consoles like Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 in terms of their capability to calculate floating point operations per second (or FLOPS). PS4 can compute around 1.84 TFLOPS (tera FLOPS), and the chart shows smartphone chips approaching 2 TFLOPS by the last quarter of 2017.

Of course, this does not mean that publisher Ubisoft will start exclusively releasing new Assassin’s Creed games for smartphones. This is partially because the audience is different on mobile, but it is also because the form factor of a touchscreen-only device requires different kinds of human-software interactions.

Romdan points out that virtual reality eliminates that form factor difference. Wearing a headset on your face is the same if you’re tethered to a PC or using a Galaxy S6.

“Our view is that mobile VR is the use case that could unlock the potential of mobile for hardcore gamers,” he said. “For once, mobile devices are on par with PC and consoles in terms of experience [when it comes to the form factor of VR]. We won’t have the same processing. And battery life is a problem. But it is the same user experience. That could be a game changer for mobile gaming.”

Disclaimer — Casual Connect paid for my travel to Amsterdam. Our coverage remains objective.

Correction — Digi-Capital forecasts the entire market for gaming in VR and AR could be $10 billion, not just $15 billion for mobile VR.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Latest News, Release Date & Update: Camera-riddled Flagship Coming In 2017

Samsung has practically wrapped up its offering for 2016 following the release of the impressive Samsung Galaxy Note 7. With 2016 ending in a couple of months, the interest expected shifts to the next flagship offering of the company for 2017 – the Samsung Galaxy S8.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 is now 6 months old and is expected to be overshadowed by the release of the Samsung phablet. With that said, most are now wondering what the Galaxy S8 will carry and the rumor mill has started buzzing. Leading the pack of speculated rumors include a dual camera and an iris scanner, the same feature that the Galaxy Note 7 boasted when it launched recently.
The Iris Scanner
It seems only natural to see this biometric feature present on the Samsung Galaxy S8. According to discussions over at Weibo, the iris scanner could be technically a third camera aside from the main and front shooters. If so, this ramps up the security measures that most phones require to date.
Dual-Lens camera coming?
Though it hasn’t come out in the open, Samsung could be adapting an alleged feature that the iPhone 7 Plus will be carrying – a dual lens camera. It is one of the more publicized features that the minimally upgraded iPhone 7 will carry, something that could ramp up the photo and video capturing resolution.
According to GSM Arena, the rear cameras will have two separate resolutions. One will have 12 MP and the other 13 MP. Be reminded that these refer only to the rear camera.

Up front, the Samsung Galaxy S8 could make jack up the front-facing resolution from 5 MP to 8 MP which means better selfie-capturing moments. If so, this sums up the cameras count for the Samsung Galaxy S8 to four – dual cameras (12 and 13 MP), front-facing (8 MP) and the one for the iris scanner.

HP Is Really Setting the Bar High for Microsoft’s Surface Phone .

HP is using the MWC 2016 conference in Barcelona, Spain, to showcase what seems to be the most powerful Windows 10 Mobile device created so far, as its hardware capabilities are even outclassing the ones of Microsoft’s very own Lumia 950 XL flagship.
And while it’s clearly a good thing to see more OEMs jumping on the Windows 10 Mobile bandwagon, HP’s Elite X3 is also setting the bar very high for Redmond’s very own Surface Phone, a device rumored to see daylight later this year.

Basically, the Lumia 950 XL has been until now the most powerful Windows 10 Mobile on the market. Thus, it came with pretty much the best hardware that you were able to find on a device running Microsoft’s new operating system.

And not only is HP’s Elite X3 fairly better than the 950 XL but it also forces Microsoft to make the Surface Phone superior to this model in order to remain the flagship of flagships.

The Surface lineup has always been about offering premium devices that no other OEMs has, so if the Surface Phone is built on the same approach, it has no other option than to outclass the Lumia 950 XL. Which, for us, the customers, is really great news because this means the Surface Phone is going to be a productivity monster in all regards.

Elite X3 for elite specifications
First of all, the HP Elite X3 comes with a 5.96-inch QHD AMOLED display with a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels, and although we doubt that the Surface Phone would come with such a large screen, the device will almost for sure have at least AMOLED tech.

Then, the X3 is powered by the Snapdragon 820 CPU, and this is exactly the processor that at some point was rumored to be offered on the Surface Phone as well. Adoption of the 820 is quite exclusive at the moment, but the moment the Surface Phone sees daylight, it might become more mainstream, so Redmond should reconsider this too.

Additionally, it features 4 GB of RAM, so offering at least the same amount is a must. A 4150 mAh battery is available on the Elite X3 to get you through the day with all this hardware under the hood, and there’s no doubt that a large capacity battery is mandatory to power the device.
What’s more, HP also went for some features that force Microsoft to innovate with the Surface Phone. For example, it offers outstanding encryption (FIPS 140-2 cryptography, 128-bit key Unified Image Encryption, 256-bit key Full Disk Encryption), a finger print sensor, and iris scanner for Windows Hello.

HP has also developed the Mobile Extender, a laptop without any internals but a screen and a keyboard, which allows you to turn the Windows 10 Mobile device into a laptop with Continuum.

Rumor has it that the Surface Phone would be developed by the same team as the one that worked on Surface tablets, and all their efforts will be headed by none other than Panos Panay. The company is already said to be looking into several “innovations,” including the possibility of running Win32 apps in Continuum when a Surface phone is being used.

Without a doubt, this list of specifications is quite impressive for Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile fans who hope to get a wider array of devices to choose from and thus help their platform succeed. And as usual, competition is really helpful in this business environment, so thank you, HP, for helping us get the Surface Phone we’ve always dreamed about.

Microsoft Updates Windows 10 Mobile Mail and Calendar

Microsoft has just released an important update for the Mail and Calendar app on Windows 10 Mobile, introducing some new features, but also several bug fixes that are supposed to improve the overall performance of the app.
And since Windows 10 Mobile is still work in progress (except on new Lumia phones, where it’s offered as a stable build), such improvements certainly come in handy.

New features
First and foremost, the update comes with options to add holidays to your calendar, but also with the possibility of seeing an entire year at a glance with Year view. Previously, the best you could get was a monthly view of your appointments, so this is clearly a significant improvement for those who rely on their phone to organize their calendar.

Additionally, you can move messages to a folder of your choice thanks to a new option included by Microsoft in the Quick Action swipe menu, in addition to delete, archive, flag, and other tools.

And last but not least, the new version allows you to add attachments by simply pasting them into the body of the message, which pretty much replicates the behavior that you get on a desktop client, and this was probably Microsoft’s idea in the first place since Outlook is also available on Windows 10 PCs.

The Mail and Calendar app receives updates on a regular basis, and all these improvements come in handy especially because it still feels slow and buggy at certain moments. The Outlook client available on Android and iOS seems to be faster and better optimized, and Microsoft can’t afford to make its Windows 10 Mobile version inferior to the ones on rival platforms.

As usual, the new Windows 10 Mobile version of Mail and Calendar can be found in the store. With the default store configuration, app updates are automatically downloaded and installed, so if your phone has already gotten the new version, the chances are that it’s there and running.
