The Most Exciting Phones Coming In 2016: Huawei P9, Nokia, Galaxy Note 6 & The iPhone 7
BlackBerry. Apple. Moto. Samsung -- a sneak peak at 2016's potentially most exciting releases
Although there are mobile device launches throughout each year, there are really two main landmarks where the bulk of the important stuff is clustered. In the first quarter it's all about Android devices in and around Mobile World Congress (MWC) which takes place around the end of February to the beginning of March; this is where the likes of Samsung, LG, HTC and Sony typically debut new flagship handsets.
The other big deal is around September, when Apple announces its new iPhone devices - historically this has also included a separate iPad launch event in October/November, but 2015 saw Apple buck that trend and pile everything into the September event. This year may also see some new habits from Apple though, as the firm is expected to host a new launch event in late March or early April for a new 4in iPhone 5se, and on top of that it may also have a new iWatch, an iPad Air 3 and/or a 9.7in iPad Pro, if various rumours are to be believed.
The only major manufacturer not being particularly active at MWC this year was HTC, though the company has now confirmed it will release its new FLAGSHIP called the HTC 10 on April 12. Motorola also usually hosts its own events later in the year, and of course Google keeps to its own summer schedule for the Nexus series. OnePlus is also working on a OnePlus 3, but that OEM has always marched to the beat of its own drum anyway.
Here's some of the big hitters to look forward to inside 2016.
Huawei P9
After testing out the Huawei Mate 8 and genuinely being blown away buy it I am now super excited about the arrival of Huawei’s next major flagship — the Huawei P9.
The handset will launch on April 6 and is expected to be one of the most powerful Android phones on the planet Much of this power will come from Huawei’s insanely powerful Kirin SoC and potentially 4GB of RAM.
There will apparently be two versions of the P9, apparently: the P9 with a 5.2in 1080p display and the P9 with a 6.2in QHD display called the P9 Max. Other specs include a MASSIVE 3900mAh battery, meaning excellent battery performance just like the Mate 8.
Samsung Galaxy Note 6
The Samsung Galaxy Note 6 is apparently returning to the UK in 2016. Reports suggest Samsung, miffed by the weak sales of its EDGE+ handset, has opted to reinstate the Galaxy Note 6 as its mid-year flagship release, picking up the slack once the Galaxy S7 has died down in and around Q2.
“Samsung has no plans to launch a Galaxy S7 Edge+ handset and will instead reinstate the Galaxy Note 6 as the brand's chief phablet in the UK,” notes Tech Radar. “That’s according to a source high up at one of the UK's major networks who cited a ‘backlash from loyal Note fans’ as one of the chief reasons for the reverse decision.”
To date not much is known about the handset, though Samsung has been filing some odd patents of late. The handset itself will likely feature QHD or higher display, Snapdragon 820/Exynos 8890 CPU and Android N, depending on when it is released. A lot of UK punters will be very excited about the prospect of getting their hands on this phablet after Samsung’s 2015 performance.
Word on the street suggests Samsung is planning something pretty EPIC for its Galaxy Note 6. According to leaked information, the Galaxy Note 6 could well be the first smartphone to rock 6GB of RAM, a frankly insane amount of memory for a phone. What could all this memory be required for? It can’t JUST be for performance.
Samsung recently filed a patent for an “upcoming” Note device that would see the phablet dock with a laptop-style device. Presumably the Galaxy Note would power the dummy laptop and all of its desktop-still applications. Could this be the reason why Samsung has included 6GB of RAM, or is it just a marketing gimmick? With Samsung you just never know….
Sony’s 2016 Flagship
Is the Sony Xperia X Performance Sony’s BIG release for 2016? That seems to be the take away from MWC 2016, but I have a sneaking suspicion the company is working on something, well, a little more special for launch later on this year.
Sony has pretty much confirmed its Z brand is dead -- Z’s dead, baby (sorry) -- and that X is the future. But were Sony’s MWC offerings the company’s only phones for the rest of the year? Or will we see a new flagship dropped inside Q2/Q3 time? Personally, I believe this will be what happens. Purely because I think Sony’s plans for its X brand are bigger and more expansive than the company let on at MWC.
Either way, I’m looking forward to seeing what the company comes to the table with.
OnePlus 3
OnePlus made A LOT of friends with the OnePlus One and then set about making a few enemies with its tricky, follow-up flagship, the OnePlus 2. The main reason people we’re a little peeved with OnePlus’ 2015 effort was because it lacked NFC, as well as a QHD panel and a fingerprint scanner.
OnePlus said people didn’t use NFC on the OnePlus One so it was nixed on the follow-up device. Well, as it turns out some people clearly did because A LOT of OnePlus 2 users were very angry when they found out their shiny new handset couldn’t do NFC, so expect to see the return of near field communication in 2016.
Another area where OnePlus could up the ante with the OnePlus 3 is its display. The company has favoured 1080p panels since day one, but 2016 could see the company finally embrace QHD. Other notable features likely to make the cut are a larger battery, a fingerprint scanner, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 and some BIG improvements to imaging.

Sony Xperia X Performance vs Galaxy S7: Head to Head!
Every year Samsung and Sony release their flagship Smartphone’s. This year Samsung and Sony have launched Galaxy S6 and Xperia Z5 Series Smartphone’s respectively. Now, talking about their next year flagship phones of Sony and Samsung. Recently Samsung has announced Galaxy S7 series which has really awesome features. As per recent leaks of Sony we got to know that there is no Xperia Z6 this year. However company has launched a new Xperia series with Xperia X, XA and Xperia X performance models. Xperia X Performance is named to be biggest flagship by Sony this year as it features snapdragon 820 SoC. Here with Xperia X Performance vs. Galaxy S7, we are going compare both these top notch mobile phones.
Both of these mobile devices are announced now, Samsung Galaxy S7 flagship is now available for pre-orders while rumours suggest that Xperia XP will release after June, 2016. Both smartphone boast powerful specifications and features like fingerprint sensors, high quality display and lightening fast processor.
Sony Xperia X Performance Vs. Galaxy S7: Comparison
Talking from display aspect which is very first things that anyone sees in any mobile device. The Galaxy S7 Smartphone is going to have a 5.1 inch Super AMOLED display with 1440 X 2560 16 million colours and Sony Xperia X Performance will have a 5.0 inch large IPS LCD display with 1080 X 1920 pixels resolution. Last year Sony has already set benchmarks by becoming the first mobile company by release Xperia Z5 with 4K HD display but it seems a huge downgrade as the phone just Full HD resolution. While Samsung Galaxy S7 will have 1440 X 2560 QHD (2.5k resolution) display. At this point, you may think Galaxy flagship has an upper hand with having larger display and high resolution. All these Smartphone’s will have 10 fingers touch and IP68 scratch and water resistance body.
Galaxy S7 vs. Xperia XP: Performance matters
The Xperia X Performance flagship will have a 3GB RAM and runs on Snapdragon 820 chipset which is the latest processor by Qualcomm. The Galaxy S7 will have both Snapdragon as well as Exynos variants. Exynos 8890 is reported to have 2.5 GHz Cortex-53 which is more powerful (20-30% efficient) than Snapdragon 820. Both mobile devices will have Android Marshmallow operating system.
Xperia X Performance vs. Galaxy S7: Camera
So finally this year we are not going to see Z6, instead we have a new Xperia X lineup here. When it comes to camera, Sony is always been named as one best camera phone manufacturer in the world. The Xperia X performance comes with 23 MP f/2.0 24mm camera while Galaxy S7 has 12 MP f/1.7 mega pixels. Both camera’s are capable of capturing high quality pictures with larger pixels. As per resent reports Samsung Galaxy S7 will be able to capture better pictures even in low light as it has f/1.7 aperture camera. So, Samsung still ruling the Xperia X series with having better camera this year.
iPad Pro to ship in 2016 and include all new display technology
Even if Apple won’t admit it, all companies are desperate for a way to push the tablet market to grow again. Phablets have sunk their teeth into tablets over the last couple of quarters, owning a good chunk of the US smartphone market, and leaving tablets in decline. Most believe that the answer to the challenge is Apple’s rumored iPad Pro, or iPad Plus, and today we get both good and bad news.
On the positive front, trusted sources claim that Apple is already in talks with display suppliers like LG, JDI and Samsung in order to mass produce AgNW-coated touch panels for the iPad Pro. AgNW means silver nanowire, which is a new material for creating transparent conductive layers from single crystals of single nanowires. These are reportedly more efficient for production costs, have better sensitivity to the touch, and the technology is also compatible with the new flexible display technology that’s been slowly taking over. This added sensitivity includes bringing features like Apple’s new force-touch gestures to the iPad as well, something also rumored in the past. This would mean that Apple would move away from traditional LCDs, which are estimated to only have around 12 years of production existence left given the difficulty there is in extracting the indium tin oxide coating that’s necessary to build them. It’s hard to tell if this will be Apple’s silent move into the OLED technology market, but it would be a smart move given its existing popularity and quality. The rumors are matched with a cherry-topper though, as it seems that this technology will also be matched by sapphire glass as well.
The bad news is that it seems this iPad Pro won’t be ready to launch until 2016, so even if Apple announces it later this year, you might just have to wait for it, just like you did with the Apple Watch.

iPhone 7 vs Samsung Galaxy S7: How Will Apple's 2016 iPhone Compare?
How will 2016's biggest flagships compare? We take a look at the rumours behind Apple's iPhone 7 and the Samsung Galaxy S7
Samsung's Galaxy S7 has been out in the wild for a little bit now and the overall reaction seems to have been largely positive both from professional reviewers and actual consumers too. What's more, although it's still early days, Samsung seems to be a lot happier with initial pre-order sales figures for the device, suggesting it may have done its job in hauling Samsung flagship performance out of a downward trend.
The Galaxy S7 is facing some stiff competition from the LG G5, however, and we've got the HTC 10 to look forward to inside April. Apple hasn't left much of a breather with the iPhone SE arriving during March, but the real contest can be seen as being either between the Galaxy S7 and the current iPhone 6s flagship, or Apple's much-rumoured iPhone 7 which will arrive in September.
Yup, the end of the year pretty much; the iPhone 7 will almost certainly launch in its usual bracket of September, but we've been hearing rumours now for a good long while, with many of them coming from repeatedly reliable sources such as KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple Insider and 9to5Mac to name but a few.
And this year’s iPhone launch will be the biggest in Apple’s history, according to reports, with three models getting official: the standard iPhone 7, the iPhone Plus and the iPhone 7 Pro. Yep, a holy trinity of iPhones for 2016 — just as the rumours said all along. The Pro version will apparently feature a VASTLY superior camera than the more standard, iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models.
Get the FULL low-down on Apple's iPhone 7 here: Apple's iPhone 7 Models Detailed: Specs & Hardware
The iPhones will definitely have a fight on their hands though, according to reports from April 4, analysts in Asia estimate than in its first month of sales over March the Galaxy S7 series shipped as many as 10 million units, up from earlier predictions of 7 million.
Analysts are now reportedly adjusting their sales forecasts for Samsung's 2016 performance, although it's important to note Samsung hasn't actually released sales and shipping figures just yet. However, Samsung did previously reveal pre-order figures and predicted the Galaxy S7 would out-sell previous flagships as a result of the surge in interest - at the time this isn't something many analysts took seriously, but it appears with the observed March performance things are looking up for Samsung with a rise in share prices and analysts suggesting the firm may be finally coming out of its two year flagship sales dip.

Waterproofing?
Samsung's muddied the waters somewhat by taking a leaf out of Apple's playbook and not disclosing much information about the processor hardware at launch. We already know from earlier rumours that both the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 and Samsung Exynos 8890 SoC's are inside various iterations of each Galaxy S7 model, and we know 4GB of RAM was rumoured too. However, all Samsung has said is that the Galaxy S7 has a 30% CPU performance uplift over the previous generation, and a 64% speed enhancement to the GPU, along with the introduction of a liquid-cooled heatpipe and heatsink setup to help in high-performance situations.
The iPhone 7 will run Apple’s next-generation A10 mobile chipset and, if previous versions are anything to go by, it should be an alarmingly powerful chipset. Apple’s A8 and A9 chipsets dominated the mobile space in 2014/15 showcasing just what was possible with processing power when you have complete control over specs, hardware and software. And this is no doubt the reason Samsung invested so heavily in its Exynos solution — it wants more control over its devices’ performance and capabilities.
However, this year’s iPhone will likely be the most spec-heavy release Apple has ever pushed to market, providing it features a QHD panel. How much RAM Apple uses is also a deciding factor in the spec battle between the two handsets as well, but mostly this is just academic — the A10 and new Exynos will be super fast, regardless for whether they’re paired with 2GB or 4GB. Apple has consistently shown it can get plenty of performance out of very little memory, so the addition of more inside the iPhone 7, alongside the A10 chip makes for a pretty monstrous phone.
One thing that can be expected for sure is that the iPhone 7 will likely come in 32, 64, and 128GB models. Thankfully Apple should drop the 16GB iPhone version this time around. However there are rumors the iPhone 7 could also come in a 256GB model…something that seems far too good to be true at present. Nevertheless, should Apple get rid of the 16GB version — something it really needs to do, as 16GB is just pathetic these days — then it stands to reason it will have to replace it with something at the top-end to bump everything down a peg and make 32GB the standard model, before 64GB and then 128GB and finally 256GB.
Again, Samsung has sort of glossed over storage capabilities, aside from the microSD slot, and even then it hasn't disclosed how big the cards can be. We believe, based on earlier benchmarks and leaks, that the Galaxy S7 series starts at 32GB onboard, and may have 64GB and 128GB models too, but Samsung is yet to confirm this.
What we do know is each Samsung model packs a hefty battery pack, either a 3000mAh cell inside the Galaxy S7 or a 3600mAh setup in the Galaxy S7 edge - both should provide plenty of juice on a single charge. There's little info about Apple's battery hardware at this stage.
Samsung Galaxy S7 vs iPhone 7: Design
At this stage information on the iPhone 7's possible design is fairly limited. Given Apple's usual MO we're fairly confident it will be a significant overhaul, as the firm tends to keep things incremental on the 'S' models (like 2015's iPhone 6s) and then puts in big changes on the lone number models, with the iPhone 7 of course being one of the latter. On top of this we've heard rumours Apple plans on making the handset incredibly thin, thin enough to warrant the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack and the adoption of built-in stereo speakers and a proprietary set of headphones (Bluetooth and/or Lightning connector compatible, allegedly), if the rumours are true.
There’s also strong hints that Apple is working on doing away with the physical home button and embedding a virtual home button and Touch ID in the screen itself, but that might not come until the iPhone 8. The iPhone 7 will almost certainly retain the same size display as this year's models with 4.7in and 5.5in models to choose from - although there is talk of a 4in iPhone 6c dropping in April.
Other whispers say we'll see a "streamlined" design with fewer obvious antennae bands, a thinner bezel around the display, and the absence of any camera bump whatsoever - the sensor will reportedly fit flush. There are also some murmurings about waterproofing.
Generally though we're expecting an extremely sleek and distinguished new iPhone that's super-thin and entirely made out of metal.
Although different from their predecessors in some ways, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are, on the whole, quite similar to the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge in terms of design. The overall shape, build quality, and materials (metal and glass) are all pretty much a repeat of last year - not that this is a bad thing of course, as last year's Galaxy S6 series was gorgeous. The most notable improvements include the addition of IP68 waterproofing and a microSD card slot. It's also worth noting that while the Galaxy S7 is pretty much the same size as the Galaxy S6, the Galaxy S7 edge is not only distinguished by its unique curved edge display, but also by being much larger than both the Galaxy S7 and the last-gen flagships, with a 5.5in display.

Japan: the country where flip-phones refuse to die
The buttons are easier to type on, the battery lasts longer, it's familiar. No, we're not talking about BlackBerry this time, but the Japanese feature phone. Glorious, folding forefather to the smartphone, and the form-factor that gave birth to gara-kei, a shorthand phrase for "Galapagos phones". It's a negative term pointing to devices that simply wouldn't survive outside of Japan. However, it's not stopped the country's biggest carrier, NTT Docomo, from revealing two new feature phone models (and a refreshed paint job for an older phone) just last week. Our Engadget Japanese colleagues were told by Docomo's spokesman that these phones are still so popular with some customers that they practically sell themselves -- many still enter their stores looking for a new flip-phone, not a smartphone.
While developing countries continue to buy up feature phones, where prices continue to plummet, Japan's feature phones remain resistant to the smartphone substitution seen in western countries. Docomo has also started offering an unlimited voice call service -- a feature that's arguably more comfortable on longer-shaped feature phones and another reason for the carrier to continually refresh its gara-kei lineup.
Fujitsu's latest model, the F-07F, has a 13-megapixel camera, 1,000mAh battery and a 3.3-inch color display: specs that make it a high-end feature phone, but (camera aside) pale in comparison to cheap, entry-level smartphones like the Moto E. Here's one more surprising point: feature phones might cost less to make, but due to carriers subsidies for smartphones (in a bid to keep its customers upgrading), feature phones often cost more per month than mainstay Android devices from the likes of Samsung and Sony. There may have been a few smartphones in flip-phone clothing, but Japan's gara-kei aren't going anywhere soon.

Today’s best-selling unlocked Android phones at Best Buy (January 6th)
BLU takes over the number 1 spot
So you got yourself some money over the holidays and now you’re looking to spend some. Why not start the new year out right with a new phone?
Purchasing a new smartphone can be quite the expensive endeavor. Moreover, it can also be a bit of a headache as you try to consider which phone, which carrier, and which rate plan is right. We’re here to help you with at least one of those segments: the phone. And, more specifically, we’re going to help nail down one place to check for your handset needs.
Why unlocked?
The benefit of an unlocked smartphone, for those who aren’t aware, is that it can be used on a variety of wireless service providers. Going this route ensures you don’t have to worry about contracts or long-term obligations. Want to hop from T-Mobile to AT&T or vice-versa? That’s no problem when you’re using an unlocked GSM phone.
We’ve gathered up the 10 best-selling unlocked Android devices from Best Buy so you can get a sense for what’s available. Indeed, you’ll see a nice mix of big-name vendors and devices from other, scrappy players. Note that we’ve omitted color variations; you might find other colors available.
So, the next time you need to replace your existing phone, consider scooping up one of these. It’s often a heck of a lot cheaper than going through your carrier in the long run.

The Acer Liquid X2 was first rumored to be available in the United States in May 2016, but now the company has confirmed that the triple-SIM smartphone will be released in Asia in January.
Acer first announced the Liquid X2 in April and now the tech firm has finally confirmed that its latest midrange Android smartphone will be launched in Asia next month.
