Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi might be gearing up to start using mobile processors designed by them. Currently, the company’s smartphones are powered by either Qualcomm or MediaTek, except the Xiaomi Redmi 2A which sports the Leadcore chipset.
According to Chinese website CN Beta, Xiaomi could launch its own processors as early as 2016. However, the report mentions that the new processor will be used for low-end Redmi series phones. Though, we can expect the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 5 to sport a Qualcomm chipset, mostly Snapdragon 820.
Xiaomi has also reportedly acquired the full range of ARM core licenses. According to a report, the company recently hired Qualcomm China Head Wang Xiang which should speed up the process too. As of now, Xiaomi has not announced anything officially.
As competitors such as Huawei, Samsung and Apple already use their own company chipsets, this move by Xiaomi does not come as a surprise.
As of now, Xiaomi is gearing up to host a event which is scheduled for August 13 where the company will unveil the new MIUI 7. The company is also expected to reveal its next flagship smartphone, Xiaomi Mi 5 during the same event. According to MIUI’s Forum, “Xiaomi New Product Launch Event is coming on Aug 13, 2015! And it’s confirmed, MIUI 7 will be released!” The event will take place at China National Convention Center.
